Excessive access to HDD when loading cover image - Sparrow3 - 10-19-2021

Excessive access to HDD when loading cover image

When loading a cover image in grid view, the HDD access goes to 100% for a long time.
Every time I start Playnite for the first time, scroll through the library and load the cover image, the HDD is extremely overloaded and I am having trouble.
This has not happened until at least version 7.7.
In version 7.7, there was very little access to the HDD and the load on the HDD was very low.
Because of this problem, I have not been able to update my version of Playnite and am still using 7.7.
Is there any solution to this problem?

Also, the above problem occurs in version 8.15 as well as version 9.4.
I have not tried other versions.

I can't reproduce it, we only load images needed to be displayed on the screen, plus they are cached. Are you using some 3rd party extensions? Can you make comparison videos? Are you sure it's Playnite creating that load? Can you verify that from Resource Monitor?

Thank you for your reply.
I am not using any extensions.
I have made a comparison video.
I would appreciate it if you could watch it.

The difference is there because you have asynchronous image loading enabled in newer versions, so Playnite allows you to scroll farther/faster even if images have not been loaded yet, but it also has to load more of them depending on how fast you scroll. You can disable this in settings, under Advanced -> Performance -> Asynchronous image loading.

Thank you for your response.
I unchecked "Asynchronous image loading" and now the HDD access is about the same as in version 7.7.
I would like to use this for now.

However, I think that the access to the HDD that occurs when "Asynchronous image loading" is enabled may damage the HDD.
There is a loud sound coming from the HDD that I have never heard before.
It is clearly an abnormal sound.
It is not normal for the HDD to remain at 100% read.
I think "Asynchronous image loading" is a very good feature, so could you please consider improving this problem?

Thank you.

This will not damage your hard drive, that's not how disk drives work. If you get loud noises from the disk drive, then you should definitely look into it, but it's not something Playnite caused or any other application just because they use disk drive to read a lot of data. Disk drives should operate at 100% read utilization just fine.
