Just wanted to know, for those of you with a big playnite collection, at what point does it start to lag or stutter?  (does it even lag?)

what do you recommend doing when that happens?

Should I have multiple playnite installations to avoid lag?

Number of games doesn't matter on high number won't cause lag. The only thing that could cause lag is game media in very high resolution on views like Grid view, scrolling can be laggy there, but primarily if you have large resolution media and slow disk drive. But again, it won't be related to number of games.

Just try it and you'll see if you get lag or not.

Also see this: https://github.com/JosefNemec/Playnite/w...-mouse-lag
Some lag can be caused by 3rd parties.

So does Playnite not create low-res thumbnails after the first time an image is loaded in order to ease this sort of suffering?

Currently, I'm sitting at ~ 15000 games and have the most extensions installed.

A slowdown is noticable, if you are using overkill themes like eMixedNite and have heavy slowdowns, if you do grouping by series or similar stuff where you have *many* things that are grouped.

I dunno what the database backend behind this it, but it really chokes on this edge cases, if you do grouping by library or platform, it is mostly fine.

My advice is that you should less graphics intense themes and disable "automatic" things done by extensions or just enable them on a case by case basis if you get in "my" (the) realm of 10k .. 15k games.

There is an extension for that to process big images.
